| URGENT ACTION NEEDED: As I've previously written about the "The Police and Fire Fighters Monopoly Bargaining Bill", S.3194 or H.R. 413, is a very egregious bill that will be destructive to local and state budgets if passed. This proposed legislation, if passed, would impose first responder monopoly bargaining on states, cities, and towns already struggling with budget shortfalls. There are 22 states which prohibit forced union dues for government employees, most of which don't authorize public-sector union monopoly bargaining. All 22 states have been found to be financially solvent and were not listed "most likely to default". This is according to a recent Business Insider's magazine rating. On average only 30 percent of government employees in these 22 states are unionized. If this legislation passes in the U.S. Senate it will wipe away the right of states to prohibit unionized monopoly bargaining. |
On the other hand, Business Insider ranked heavily unionized California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Ohio and Wisconsin as the worst default risks. In these nine states 61 percent of public-sector employees were under union monopoly bargaining -- 20 percent higher than the typical state. On average 41 percent of government unionized employees are subject to a contract negotiated by a union monopoly bargaining agent. This is according to data from respected labor economists Barry Hirsch and David Macpherson from a 2009 study. Currently, 1.1 trillion is spent from half of ALL state and local government budgets on employee compensation. This amount will dramatically increase if this legislation passes the U.S. Senate.
The U.S. House of Representatives version of this bill (H.R. 413) initially couldn't be passed on the House floor due to the shear unpopularity of this bill. Under intense pressure from labor union leadership Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, had H.R. 413 added to war funding legislation which passed in the House in order to fund the military. These unscrupulous tactics used by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, Senate Majority Leader, are rapidly advancing the labor union's agenda.
I ask those of you reading this article to please call your two U.S. Senators and tell them to vote against S. 3194, "The Police and Fire Fighters Monopoly Bargaining Bill". This bill will further erode states rights and place more power and control with the Federal Government. It will force more and more state and local government budgets to be deemed "most likely to default".
